Maybe bad planning on our part, but our flight is getting us in to Milan very early on Easter Sunday. We were thinking that we'd like to head somewhere outside of Milan for the first day in order to 'get used to' the time zone/jet lag we're sure to encounter. Being that it is a major holiday, does anyone have recommendations for the place to head? We were considering Bolzano, but given we're arriving late March it appears that the trails may not be open at that time. Suggestions?
Have you checked the train/bus websites, and also the website schedule for the Malpensa shuttle to Milan (you're landing at Malpensa or Linate?), to see whether public transportation is operating, or on reduced schedules, on Easter Sunday? That will affect your decision.
Transportation should be available on the usual Sunday schedule. If you don't want to stay in Milan, it is easy to get to Lake Como. For Varenna, you have to get to Milan first. Try to get a hotel reservation for that night as many Italians travel on the holidays and hotels may be full.
