Arrival in Rome (FCO) Terminal 3

We are traveling with a couple that has never been to a foreign destination before. Initially, we had hoped to route them through JFK so that we could fly overseas together. However, between the price and/or the logistics (sometimes both) it seems costly. We found flights where we would be scheduled to arrive 30-minutes before their scheduled arrival which seems optimal, but we know they are skittish about negotiating the airport alone.

Would anyone know if there is a place within Terminal 3 that we could meet them prior to going through customs? Is it possible to wait at their arrival gate?

I think the most practical meeting point is after Passport Control at the baggage area. I don't believe you will be able to wait at their gate.

Here is a video you can share with your friends about what to expect so that they can feel more confident.

It is pretty hard not to just follow crowds/signs to Passport control.

How about the train platform that goes into town? There are pictures of a train with an arrow of which way to go. Either way make sure you can text each other. Planes can be delayed, lines can be long. It is a good idea to be flexable and have the means to adjust the meeting point if necessary. J

And I believe you mean Passport control not Customs. Customs is nothing more than walking through a door that says” Nothing to Declare.”
You can’t meet them before they go through Passport Control. And no, you can’t wait at their arrival gate in any airport since 9/11.
You are very good friends to be so concerned and helpful. As mentioned above, tell them to follow the signage which will direct them clearly.
Rome has one of our favorite airports. Once they arrive , have a wonderful trip together!
