I will be flying from the US through Rome to Palermo. Will it be necessary for me to go through customs in Palermo and Rome? Is it necessary for me to collect my bags in Rome? Thanks so much.

Is you flight on one ticket? If yes, your bags will go through to Palermo. In any event, you will go through immigration/passport control in Rome.

You will go through passport control/immigration at Rome FCO, very fast, a special checkpoint. I can't remember where Customs was as all I ever do in Europe is walk through the Nothing to Declare exit. If you are on one ticket and checked your bags through, you will not see them until Palermo.
