I understand that the train is the easiest way to get to Rome once our ship docks. Is the train close to the port? Do we get tickets ahead of time?
We have rooms in Trastevere near Ponte Sisto, is there a train stop near there or do we go to the main terminal & take a taxi back to Trastevere? Thanks!

We are arriving in May on a transatlantic cruise and have booked transport to our Rome Hotel with another couple.
Train is likely the cheapest, but not the easiest. It was 2014 when used Civitavecchia Cab for a shared transfer to our hotel in Trastevere. It picked us up steps from the ship. If I remember correctly it is about a 15-20 minute walk to the train station and then once in Rome it's still a hike or a cab ride to Trastevere. I believe there is a train that stops at the San Pietro station near the Vatican.
Obviously there are "more" passengers using large ships than small ships, but it may be wise to try and find out if your ship is using the modern cruise terminal, or if it might be pierside like the old days. Our Windstar (300 passengers) was pierside, and taxis could not approach the ship directly. We saw other small ships at Civit. that were pierside.
Unknown whether pier auto traffic was restricted for security, pedestrian safety, or to protect the bookings for expensive cruise-company transfer-products.
Arrival in Civitavecchia is somewhat complicated. From the terminal you will take free bus to the port arrival area--which is basically a large parking lot with information booths. The train is not close to the port, but there is a shuttle bus from the port arrival area that goes directly to the train station. Do not bother with a taxi. Be sure to buy the shuttle ticket before you board, you can't by one on board. Also, many trains from Civitavecchia stop at Roma Trastevere, which is much closer to your accommodations than Roma Termini. These are commuter trains so you don't need to buy your tickets in advance. Have a great trip.
