Arezzo to Sorrento by Train

Later this fall we are dropping a rental car off at Arezzo and then need to make our way to Sorrento. I have tried to book a train ticket for this leg of our trip, however I have only been able to book to Naples or Salerno.

Can someone please advise on the best way to travel to Sorrento. We were hoping to avoid a private car rental (costly)

Thanks

The train from Naples to Sorrento is not operated by Trenitalia or Italotrain but by two separate different companies
Circumvesuviana and Campania Express
https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule

Those trains leave from Naples Garabaldi right next door or down the stairs from Naples Centrale.
The Circumvesuviana is a cash only commuter like train that you just show up to catch
The Campania Express you can book in advance it runs on the same tracks as the Circumvesuviana when it is in season

thank you very much for this information.
Just a question, but would taking a ferry from Naples to Sorrento be a viable option with luggage?

Note that the Campania Express only runs tourist season mid-March to mid-October.

Ferries from Naples>Sorrento:

They should be running this route in the fall unless the sea is too rough. Luggage is not a problem. One thing to be aware of is that the Circumvesuviana/Express train station is in the upper town of Sorrento and the Marina Piccola ferry port sits below. How you reach your hotel from either depends on where it's located.

The Circumvesuviana and the Campania Express trains are run by the same company, use the same Underground tracks and the ticket offices are in the same area near the platforms. At Napoli Centrale, following the Circumvesuviana signs you'll find both trains.

"but would taking a ferry from Naples to Sorrento be a viable option with luggage?"

That wouldn't be my first choice (in fact for me it would be a darn nuisance). You'd first have to take a Taxi from Napoli Centrale to Molo Beverello or wherever the Ferry departs from, which is going to add time and cost.

The first part of your trip is easy, train from Arezzo to Napoli Centrale. The quickest solution seems to be a departure at 08:34, arriving at 11:28 (time 2H:54M, one change at Roma Termini). The later departures take considerably longer. When you arrive in Naples, you have several choices.....

  • Circumvesuviana (cheap but a bit "colourful" as it's a commuter train.... watch your luggage carefully during the trip)
  • Campania Express (more comfortable as it's a tourist train, but whether it's still operating "later this fall" will depend on exactly when your trip will be taking place).
  • Private transfer (this will be the easiest but also the most expensive solution.... if your budget allows, arriving in Sorrento via air conditioned vehicle will certainly be the easiest and most comfortable choice.... I believe this service is still listed in the guidebook and it doesn't cost anything to get an estimate - http://www.monettitaxi17.it/English.htm ).
