Arezzo as base in Mid September

We will be spending 3 nights in Arezzo and will be using strictly trains as transportation. My wife and I would be willing to travel as much as 2 hours by train to visit places such as Bologna,San Marino etc. with a focus North and West of Arezzo.
After the 3 nites, Arezzo is our starting point for a bike tour that will cover South and EAST of Arezzo. Thank You

Good question, Nigel.

Maybe George is asking if Arezzo is actually two hours away from Bologna and San Marino* ?

*a place no Italian living outside Emilia Romagna has ever dreamt of visiting. I mean, we are grateful for their help and the debt is eternal and so on... but in the end today San Marino is just a big Duty Free on top of an hill where old chaps buy blue pills at a discount. Sure, the historic center is nice: like thousands of similar historic centers around Italy. Why are Americans so obsessed with San Marino?

Why only trains? How about buses? Many interesting towns are on top of hills and not served by train.

Besides Arezzo, which has several things to see, you could visit:
Cortona (bus or train to Camucia+bus)
Anghiari (bus)
Lucignano (bus)
Casentino Valley via train + bus (Poppi, Stia, Camaldoli, Casentino Forest National Park)
Castiglion del Lago (train)
Florence

The above are close by and within one hour. In two hours you can be almost anywhere, including Rome, Lucca, Pisa, Perugia, Assisi, etc.

Arezzo's a pleasant place by itself with some good attractions. It's situated around a hill, so choose a hotel that's nearer the train station to make walking access easier.

3 nights is only two full days, so you really only have to think of one day trip as there is plenty to keep you busy for a day in Arezzo.
If your focus is "north and west of Arezzo", then I suggest Sienna, about 1.5 hours away by bus with several departures per day.
Florence is within easy reach, too, but it could be overwhelming for just a day trip.
