Areas around Assisi

Any recommendations of areas to visit around Assisi? We will be there for 3 days and I would like to have a few ideas of fun things to do in the area. We will be with our 18 month old, so please take that into consideration!

As far as I know, Todi only can be reached by bus. It's a lovely town, but there are only a couple of buses a day (one leaves at 5:55am), none on Sunday.

Spello and Trevi are on the rail route. It's a trek from the train station up to Trevi town; there is a bus but I think it runs on a school schedule.

There are sights pertaining to Saint Francis just outside of Assisi, you can hire a cab for those if you are not into hiking.

By the way, your 18-month-old will be a rock star in Italy.

We spent 3 days in Assisi. Lots to see but we also just got in the car and drove. Lots of towns around. Spello and Spoleto are two that we enjoyed.

I enjoyed driving to some of the small towns near Assisi. Thumb through a guidebook that covers the smaller towns in the area and pick a few that sound interesting to you (that's what I did). Deruta is near Assisi and worth a stop, especially if you like pottery. If you're in Assisi on May 15, consider going to Gubbio for the annual Festa dei Ceri.

Frank's suggestion about Gubbio is excellent. Gubbio is also famous for ceramics. Since you have a car, you might also consider Montefalco.

Montefalco. You can follow the Sagrantino wine trail.

There is a Roman ruin at Carsulae that no one visits and you can have fun there. If the child is ambulatory they might have fun crawling on very old Roman buildings.

Deruta is nice, great place for ceramics, watch them hand paint and decorate them

Todi, Orvieto, Spoleto, Perugia, and Cortona are all worth seeing. You child might like the Monster Park near Bomarzo just a little south of Orvieto.

Having a rental car is great, you can see a lot just by driving around, let alone stopping somewhere. Look for gelato!!!!
