Are Vatican reservations really needed in the afternoon?

I have been reading on different websites, that Vatican reservations are really not needed (to avoid the long lines) if you visit in the afternoon? Is this true in September? Thanks!

You do not need reservations for the Vatican in the afternoon. Visit anytime after 12:00 (even earlier really) and you will be able to walk right in.

If you go on Wednesday morning, likely (but not guaranteed) the Pope will be giving a public address in St. Peter's square. If you are not going to see him, go to the Vatican at that time. Much shorter line!
I was there in late September/early Oct last year and had my hotel/bed and breakfast reserve all my museums for me in advance. I wanted to be as efficient as possible to maximize my time and would not want to risk assuming the lines would be shorter at any given time, and then end up getting burned. :)
