I am planning a trip with my mother and sisters to Italy and were hoping to go to the Amalfi coast in mid October. A friend living in Italy told us to avoid that area because of "water problems." Is there a drought? Floods? Contamination of some kind? The hoteliers won't tell us, if we ask them! Thanks!
My wife and I were there last Oct for a week and we did not notice any problems. Was a great time of year to visit. You can see our pictures at http://gadtravel.blogspot.com/
Jen, some of the off post housing of Naval service members are currently having high bacteria problems in their water and are having to use only bottled water until the source is fixed. But that is only in particular locations throughout the Naples area, the Amalfi Coast should be fine.
I was in Sorrento this June and heard/saw nothing. There was an article/map in an Italian newspaper that showed Italy has the most polluted beaches in the Mediterrain and alot of the Amalfi coast was in the black. There has also been a noticeable increase in jellyfish throughout the Med. My husband got a terrible bite in Positano in 2004. These are both beach issues though and doubtful that your October trip involves sea swimming.
