we will be in Ventimiglia for 4 hours and would like to leave our bags in secure storage however I'm reading conflicting information about lockers at the station. Can anyone confirm if lockers are available? Thanks in advance.

Based on the latest news I was able to gather there is one but as of July 2013 it was locked up and closed and it has been closed for a couple of years. Whether it will be open when you go I don't know, but it is safe to assume that it will not be reopened. Ventimiglia is a minor station and I doubt the lolume of business justifies the presence of a fully staffed baggage storage. The era of loss making State owned enterprises is over in Europe. Angela Merkel is in charge now.

Many thanks for your quick reply. I'm wondering now if a short stop over is worth the trouble given that we will have to drag our bags with us......

I spent an extended stay in Menton and Nice, just over the border from Ventimiglia, in 2011. It was such an easy train hop that I went a couple of times. It was a good spot for saving on food stuffs at the market, but the overall town looks tired. It's very skipeable, IMO, if you don't have to spend that long in between trains. I don't recall seeing any luggage lockers in the small station, but then I wasn't looking for that.
If you need/want to break up your journey a bit, then I would try Nice - the services are there. You could just walk out of the station and walk towards the Promenade or Vieux Nice.
