Are there buses that go by the Florence American Cemetery & Memorial? We will travel by taxi to there, but I am not sure how we can return to Florence, which is where we are staying. Has anyone been there and know if there are buses or a taxi stand there? I appreciate any help. Thanks
No taxi stand - the cemetery is very much in the middle of nowhere. Buses between Florence (at the bus station in via S. Caterina da Siena) and San Casciano val di Pesa should stop at the cemetery gate. Timetable at http://www.acvbus.it/orari/368-370.pdf; pay attention service on festive days is severely reduced. The cemetery being a minor stop close to Terme di Firenze.
I do not know how long your visit could be, but you could also try to contract with the taxi driver to wait for you while you visit. If the worst comes to the worst, I guess the walk back to Tavarnuzze, that has urban bus service to Florence, should be about 40 minutes.
Greetings Marie,
Last September, our tour drove by the Florence American Cemetery/Memorial. We did not have time to get out but we were able to view the entrance....I would have loved to walk through the memorial. Anyways, I kept the brochure in case I was ever back in the area.
There are buses that go by, "The "SITA" bus station provides frequent bus service along Via Cassia and there is a bus stop located just outside the cemetery gate"
Go to www.abmc.gov --- there is great information about this commemorative site --- make sure to check the directions tab, they give complete instructions on the ways that you can visit this area, plus a direct email and phone number to the site.
Hope this helps................Nancy Rose
If you are pressed for time, you might also arrange with your taxi driver to pick you up at an appointed time, perhaps a couple of hours later, or ask what the charge would be for waiting.
I can't help with transportation info, but I hope you can make it there. We visited the cemetery a few years back and found it absolutely lovely. It was a very memorable visit.
