Are reservations necessary for wine tastings

We have a few hours to site see on our way from the airport in Florence to our Agriturismo outside San Gimignano before check in. My thought is to drive down 222 & hit some wineries for some tatsings & hit lunch at a cute restaurant with a view. Am I being unrealistic to be able to pop in a winery if I do not plan to get a full tour but to only taste & purchase a bottle of wine?

Stop at the tourist info desk at the Florence airport and see if you can get a Chianti region winery map. That will give you lots of info. You'll see winery signs along the road. "Degustazione" means tastings. Depending on the time of day, some may be closed - but the wineries that are open will be happy to have you stop in and have a sip, and happier still to sell you a bottle or two.

Laurie: Along the S222 there gobs and gobs of wineries. I would advise that you plan ahead and make a reservation - you will have a much more fulfilling experience. In our travels through Tuscany we found that the few " in " tasting locations were simply not as much fun as those we planned ahead with. I suggest a couple for you to consider - Volpaia (just outside of Greve) and the other is Panzanello (on the outskirts of Panzano). Both are less than an hour south of Florence. Both have English language websites. By contacting them ahead of time you can get exactly what you want. Both have the capacity to provide you a luncheon with the great view you desire as well. Have fun.
