Are bugs a problem in May?

I notice there are no screens on the windows (my daughter in Rome also says she has none). What about mosquitoes, etc?

We were in Italy in May for three weeks and didn't have any problems with bugs. We were in Rome, Bologna, Assisi, Lucca and Venice. But I've also seen those postings about mosquitoes being a sometimes problem in Venice. I wonder if it varies a lot from place to place within Venice.

We got eaten up in Venice last week! Not terribly, but enough, and I was somewhat surprised- I hadn't really thought about it as a problem in early spring, although I should have since the hotel had provided mosquito repellent wipes!

I haven't been in one hotel in Italy that had screens on the windows, a standard feature of virtually all hotels here. Maybe the 5-star hotels in Italy have screens, I haven't stayed in those.

Mosquitoes have been reported as a problem in Venice in the summer months. And now we have the report, just posted, that it was a problem in April.

And here's another thread running currently on this site that discusses the problem click here.

I can't say that I necessarily felt that the mosquito bites were a result of not having screens on the hotel windows- I'm betting it is more likely we got them out on the canals or walking around in Venice, which surprised me having long sleeves on, and even a jacket- the bites were largely on my arms. I actually felt one buzzing past my face in my hotel in Florence though! So I suppose I would say just be aware of the possibility and take advantage of repellents that are provided!

We spent several weeks in Venice photographing 2 years ago.... in May.Stayed in a 4 star hotel. No screens and the AC was not turned on yet. There are special times. We loved the hotel, had a patio, and yes, mosquitos.Take some wipes, in a ziplock.
