Are Amalfi Coast beaches family-friendly?

Anyone who has been to Amalfi Coast:
Well I know that they are not beaches like we have with sand... but anyway, I am wondering if there are a lot of nude tanners on these beaches, or if there are not, because since we are going on a family vacations, I don't want to take the kids to a beach full of topless sun-bathers. I ask this because I know its common in Europe. I know someone who lived in France and she would go tanning this way. Should I avoid the beaches of the Amalfi Coast with kids?
Thanks for your help!

You won"t run into "nude tanners" on the Amalfi beaches - maybe the occasional topless sun-bather. Nothing to worry about. The beaches are mostly stones so you may want to wear some kind of beach sandal.

OK Kent I'm up now... I'm not sure I want to known as the "topless Italian beach expert!" Both Mike and Kent are correct. Many beaches in the south are rocks/stone so get out your sandals or flip flops!

Today I am part of a school group (6-8th graders) headed to the beach. Three days of school left and these guys are using one to go to the beach... and the seniors are on a 3-day trip to the Naples area beaches! For most of these kids they have been to the beach in Italy. Yes there are women going topless STILL in Italy. Like many laws here, who will choose to enforce this one? Certainly NOT many of the Polizia!!!

I would say perhaps 15-20% of the younger ladies on the "private" beaches are topless - the public beaches maybe run 10-15%... By private, I mean you pay to rent a chair, they have snack bars and restrooms, etc... I DO NOT MEAN PRIVATE NUDIST COLONY BEACHES - They have those too, but they are usually secluded and gated! Often you will walk through a "private beach area" to get to the public beach area. Here going topless is not a big thing. We had US kids at the beach 2 weeks ago and after initial reactions, they did not even notice! The MALE chaperones certainly wanted to go play volleyball with a few Italian ladies.... but that's a WHOLE different topic.

So almost all beaches here you'll see someone topless but it's just not a big deal - and other than those teenage boys (and perhaps their fathers???) most people just don't care or don't notice. When we chaperone these kids we "prepare" the younger set but after an initial reaction, they're off to play on the beach... it's the adults who have all the "ideas."

Thanks for title Kent - I won't be sharing that with my wife! Ciao,

Ron

Thanks! I don't think we will have a problem taking the kids to the beaches down there! They are very excited to be going there and now we are just counting down the days until we leave! Well, I don't want to be involved in the awarding of titles... but I will say I got a good laugh out of that one. Thank you for your input!
