I know that arancini is a Sicilian food. I've had some amazing arancini in Sicily. But on our upcoming trip to Italy I won't be venturing to Sicily. Does anyone know of a place in Rome that serves great arancini? We are staying around the Spanish Steps. If not in Rome, we are also venturing to Florence and Milan on this trip.
Hi Brian. Roma is more known for suppli which are also rice balls with cheese, lightly breaded and fried. The best ones we've ever had were at Pizzeria da Remo in Testaccio. It is one of our top two fave pizzas, too.
Le Sicilianedde, a cafe in the Parioli neighborhood a bit east of the Villa Borghese Zoo, has real Sicilian arancini and many creative fillings. Taverna Rossini, even closer to Villa Borghese and the Zoo has both arancini and suppli on their menu. They do a good job on fritti overall.
Laurel's suggestions are great; in other areas, look for "friggi" places, or street-food places. Sometimes the places that sell pizza by the slice also have suppli/arancini. Suppli tend to be smaller in size.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Also look for two chain-type places called Mondo Arancina (one shop is on via Flaminia, a five mins away from piazza del Popolo) and Ciuri Ciuri (by the metro stop Cavour), respectively - they're both by Sicilian entrepreneurs and offer a wide range of Sicilian street foods (as does Osteria San Francesco, although that is more on the restaurant side of things - on piazza della Torretta, by piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina).
We have been back for a few weeks. We found suppli in Rome. We enjoyed it at Supplizio. It's several blocks south of the Ponte Sant'Angelo on via dei Cartari.
If you are in Prati near the Piazzale Clodio bus hub there's a small bar/carryout near the newsstand that sells 5 different kinds all the time. It's near the corner of Via Teulada.
