We will be traveling with our children ages 10 to 21 to Italy and I read on this site no shorts. We live in Florida and that's all they wear. Any suggestions? We are going in July and jeans will be too hot.
The only place where shorts are not allowed in Italy is in many of the major churches/duomos/cathedrals; in fact, some of the major churches, such as St Peter's, have dress code enforcers and strictly enforce the rule of no bare knees or bare shoulders on all, regardless of age or gender.
Shorts are no problem. I lived in Italy for several years and have been returning every year or so since the early 70's and I always wear shorts. Even the locals are starting to wear them.
I would suggest that you purchase a pair of convertible pants for your 21 year old. They have some good ones at REI or practically any sporting good store. I have even found them at Target occasionally. That way he can zip the legs on when you go into a church or take them off and wear as shorts when outside in the heat. Harder to find them in small sizes for the 10 year old. Last year JCPenney had some - so you may need to go online and shop around. My son is 13 and I ended up buying a man's size extra small and a belt to keep them from falling off him (smile).
MOST churches in Italy won't allow you inside if your shoulders and knees aren't covered. Some are more strict about not allowing shorts so you may want to invest in some linen pants or convertable pants. This rule applies to all men, women and children. You don't want your vacation ruined by being kicked out of the churches you wish to see.
For visiting other sites you will be fine wearing shorts. Most Italians don't wear them but you're not Italian so you don't need to worry about it.
