Appropriate clothing

Are leggings an acceptable casual clothing choice in most Italian cities?

My "uniform" on our April 2022 trip to Italy was 3/4 sleeve tees with Athleta joggers. I did not feel uncomfortable anywhere - with that said, we did not patronize high end restaurants or concert halls. If we had, I would have worn leggings with a tunic style top.

Acceptable if you want to be easily spotted as American tourists who don’t care much about the local culture, yes.

  • italian women wear leggings, too
  • nobody cares how tourists dress
  • locals not working in tourism rarely register the existence of tourists while going on with their daily lives
  • local culture isn't particularly affected by those behaviours who have zero impact on locals' daily lives

It seems Italy must be a completely untapped source for legging sales... what a silly comment

We live in the age of instagram. Global monoculture has taken root in many avenues, fashion being one of them.

Honestly, we’ve seen very few leggings in Venice, Florence, Lucca and Cinqueterre, except on tourists! But, it has been hot and that may change as it cools off. Seeing lots of dresses, skirts, jeans, trousers/slacks-they are NOT pants as most look like the new fashion trend of long and loose with high waists.
But-if they are your comfort zone, why not? You won’t stand out as it is true that no one really notices. What we have noticed is some pretty skimpy dressing however you don’t sound like you’ll be going that direction!

I think it depends on how you style them. Crop top and tennis shoes, probably not...oversized top probably. I wore a pair of black leggings all over Europe (With booties and tennis shoes) and never felt like I stuck out or had any moments when I felt odd. I just always do the "can you see my underwear through these" test.

No one cares as long as they look decent. I saw lots of leather look leggings in Paris and a few in Milan on all body types. London not so much. I’m heading to Venice in an hour.

I packed 3 pair of leggings and a variety of tunics to go with them. Leggings are black or gray. Shirts are red, black and white, most with a pattern, long enough to hide my derrière.
