I'm trying to travel light this time, but it's harder for a woman, I think (as has been discussed on this forum). I plan to pack a couple of knit dresses and a pair of nice slacks for city sightseeing. What do women wear (I will be 65) in the Cinque Terre? We will be walking the trails, riding the train and ferry, and relaxing around town, and I don't want to offend local sensibilities.
Wear your sportier clothes for the CT. Hiking, etc are activities requiring mobility and sturdy shoes.
Thanks, Swan.
Very casual in CT. Activities are casual outdoor dining, relaxing overlooking the ocean or on the beach at Monterosso, or hiking the trail between the towns. When hiking, any decent walking shoes are fine for the trail. Some restaurants are nicer than others but never noticed a dress code. We were in Vernazza, I'm not sure about dress for nightlife up the coast.
Thanks. It's really helpful to hear from people who have been there.
Of the 15 or so cities and towns I've visited in Italy, the CT were by far the most relaxed as far as dress. But you'll feel more comfortable if you dress up a little for dinner rather than wearing your dayhiking outfit.
My wife took 2 pairs of light-weight travel trousers with zip-off bottoms. In the CT, it was warm enough on our hikes for her to zip off the bottoms and travel around in reasonably long shorts (and get a bit of a tan at the same time). She did this in Florence as well. She would wash them in the room and they would be dry by morning. She also had a light-weight dress for nicer outings. Her total travel bag for 3 weeks weighed 12kg.
My wife was 65 during our visit last year. Not a problem. You should see what others wear.
