I noticed that the web site for San Marcos in Venice suggests appropriate attire, but there are no specific details. Also I've heard from other travelers that shoulders and knees should be covered in churches. Since we'll be traveling in warm weather, I'm curious if the knee covering is a real requirement. I'm not considering shorts, but will long pants or skirts be necessary? Will mid-length skirts to the knee do the trick, or will they have to be below the knees? I want to travel with only a carry-on bag, so packing is critical. Thanks!
This question is asked frequently. The standard advice given here is: you've named one of the two churches in Italy that's most likely to strictly enforce the "knees must be covered" rule: the other is St Peter's at the Vatican. There are enforcers at the door at these two. Every time this subject comes up someone will reply claiming to know of a way around this: "they" will give you something to wrap around your shorts, etc--I don't know about that. I think it's just better practice to wear a skirt that day (capris work or for hot days a skirt will be cooler). You may be able to push the envelope at other churches but not there.
To be safe, have your knees and shoulders covered. Long pants are not necessary. Shorts or skirts that cover the knee are just fine.
You might be able to get away with something just to the knee, but for a couple of inches, is it worth the risk?
Go for the long skirt if you feel pants will be too hot. Wear this each time you are visiting a church and you'll have no problems. Definately cover your shoulders. It's basically all about respect for the institution and the Italians take this very seriously, especially in the more famous ones.
Splash - yes the knee covering is a real requirement. Your skirt needs to cover your knees so it needs to be BELOW your knee. You don't have to wear long pants - capris work as well. And don't worry about being cool - a light summer skirt is SO much cooler than pants (or even capris) - much more "breezy".
