Appreciate trip itinerary ideas for Milan area in January

Hi travel experts! My husband and I are in Milan mid-January for work. We are adding on 5 days to explore the area. We have been to Rome, Venice and Florence in the recent past. Can someone advise ideas on what to do? We love the idea of going on a scenic train trip to Switzerland for a day trip. Figured a day or two in Milan would be nice, then another day trip somewhere maybe - but looking for advise. Also thinking easiest to stay in Ana apartment in Milan and travel around from there - but open minded for another great location.

Thanks!

I would definitely visit Varenna on Lake Como. It takes about an hour to get there by train from Milan. Once in Varenna, you can take the ferry to other towns along the lake. Be sure to buy a around trip ticket because the train station at Varenna does not sell tickets to my knowledge. Also validate the ticket before getting on the train. I would also recommend that you go on the roof of the Duomo. It is a lot of fun.

Milano is great for a few days' stay, and there are major clothing sales in January.

The Duomo climb (or elevator) is great. Walk along the roof for some face time with the gargoyles and spires. The Museum across the street is very good, too. Leonardo's Last Supper requires a timed reservation, so you need to move on that. The Castello Sforzesco museum is excellent, as is the Brera Gallery.

Lake Como may have iffy weather in January.
