Appian Way in Rome

I am trying to figure it out.

  1. Should we get on the bus to Appian Way?
  2. Should we ride a bike from Colossuem to Appian Way?
  3. Which is the best path to see the Ancient Rome in Appian Way?

Any other thoughts?

We prefer self guide to save a lot of budget and enjoy on Sunday.

Should is a difficult word.

I think you should do what you want, not what masses or a stranger says.

You say nothing about yourselves in the post or your profile so I can only guess if you prefer buses (you can do a bus depending on where you are) or riding bicycles (you can do that too, but I don't know if you are fit, or elderly, or have 10 children with you).

To see the Appian Way the best path is the Appian Way. I don't understand your question number three.

Rick Steves in his Rome guidebook spends many pages on the Appian way and how to get there and what to do.

  1. I believe that the large park in Appian Way. I am trying to save the trip to not get a lost. I am trying to find the right path to get aqueducts and tombs. I may need a good map from Colossuem to Aqueducts by biking.

You can take a bus out to a stop near the Appian Way and rent bikes there, rather than bike from the Colosseum. The Via Appia Antica is where you want to bike. There are a couple of museums/sights along the way. Buy water when you have the chance, or bring a bottle with you.

If you have time, at Porta San Sebastiano there is the Museo delle Mura, where you can climb and walk part of the ancient Roman wall before you take the bus to Via Appia Antica.

The Appia is still today one of the longest, straitest 'roads' in Europe so once on it, it's impossible to get lost.

I'm pretty sure most visitors who rent bikes do so at the park (we walked some miles of it but a friend of mine biked it) and not at rental service near the Colosseum:

Aqueduct Park is a long way out so either bike or take a bus:

The website is full of useful info, and you should pick up a map at the Visitor Center or download some useful brochures from the site before you go:

I don't remember exactly how we got there, but I do know we took the metro out to a distant stop (perhaps the terminus?) and switched to a bus which dropped us at the Appia Antica. We walked to one of the catacombs and toured. It was quite simple, and I really enjoyed the area. Wish we could have stayed longer.

I would not bike it unless it is on a Sunday when it is closed to traffic. It's a busy road, cobbled, and has almost no shoulder. If you're able to go on a Sunday, you can bikes there and avoid having to ride on trafficked roads. The Appia Antica Cafe rents bikes on the Appian Way. Last summer we took a bus from the Baths of Caracalla, if I remember right it was #118. Unfortunately, we could not get there on a Sunday, and did not rent bikes.

Yes we are planning go on Sunday. I may use Metro or bus to get there and then rent bike. I wonder, do they have Electric Bike?

I don't think the cafe rents electric bikes, but you should probably contact them and ask. These guys rent them, but they are near the Colosseum and you'd have to ride streets open to traffic to get to the Appian Way from there.
