Has anyone rented bikes to ride or done other activities on the Appian Way or is it more of a normal street leading to other sites like the catacombs?

No, it is the old Appian Way, cobblestone street in areas and it does link a number of sites including catacombs. It is narrow with high side walls -- almost tunnel like. On Sunday traffic is limited so that it is easy to walk or ride. Towards the middle is a bike rental shop. It fun to do. Gets you away from the hustle of the city -- very pleasant on Sunday.
