Appian Way/Catacombs - How To Get Around?

Planning our big trip to Rome. We would like to see the Appian Way and the catacombs along it. I have looked at Google Maps and see that there are many sites around the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica, and that the Catacombs we would like to see are in the area but a bit further to the south. Has anyone visited this area? Are the catacombs and other archeological sites within walking distance of the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica? We intend to take the bus, so I don't see us having a vehicle of any sort. We are able bodied but would like to know how much walking we need to plan on doing.

Thank you all.

I've never taken a bus down there (only a taxi) so can't advise on that part, but a good place to start is the Appian Way Tourism Information Centre, near Porta San Sebastiano. We went on a Sunday, when it's pedestrian-only, and the walk from there was both easy and lovely. It's mostly flat and not at all strenuous. We walked for probably an hour and a half in total, down and back, but could have gone longer.

Which catacombs are you planning to see?

Sunday is not completely pedestrian only. Taxis and buses still run through the area. I would use the taxi. Taxis in Rome are reasonable especially if more than one. You must get your taxi at a taxi stand since you cannot wave them down on the street as you might do in Chicago or New York.

To clarify, I meant the preserved parts within the archaeological park are pedestrian-only vs bikes being allowed on other days. At least that was my understanding when we were there.
