Are they worth taking a day to see? Don't hear much about either one.
I've been two times on two different trips. Hard to believe that just outside of Rome can be so peaceful. It's well worth the trip.
Maybe not an entire day, but we very much enjoyed taking the Archeobus from Termini, which is a hop-on / hop-off bus, to see both.
You can quite easily take a half day and visit them both. Take the metro A to San Giovanni, and from there bus 218 will take you right down the Appia Antica where you can get off at any of the many catacombs you will find there. ON the way back you may want to take a taxi, the buses coming back seem to take a bit longer.
The catacombs are definitely worth a visit.
They are both worth seeing. Take Roy's advice and hop on the bus. I have learned to love hop on and off buses. Get off and see what interest you most. You can avoid the stress of driving or finding other local transportation.
I thought I read somewhere that the Appian Way was closed on Sunday to vehicular traffic. Does any remember if this is accurate?
Yes it is closed on Sundays, except to bicyclists and an electric bus that makes the run from the Circo Massimo metro stop to the tomb of Cecilia Metella and back. Bus #760. MUCH nicer to do on a Sunday.
Thanks every one for your help. Sunday will work perfect for us too.
Hi Jo,
We enjoyed seeing the Catacombs. We went to San Callisto which was the only one that is actually open on Sunday. Priests give the tours (in multiple languages). It was interesting. We also enjoyed just walking around the Appian way and park area. Make sure to bring water though because it get's hot out there.
Have a great trip!
