will be in rome in just over a week, i would like to see appian way. whats the best way to go about it? walk it? bus? bike? tour? thnx
I don't recommend the Archeobus mentioned in Rick's book, though. It doesn't go out very far anymore and if you hop off, you never know when the next bus will show up. I noticed last Sept the local buses seemed to run quite often.
We liked the Archeobus. I think it works best on a Sunday. The ticket is good for 24 hours we got ours about noon on Sunday. At the turn around point which I am guessing may be about mid way down the Appian Way, there is a bike rental place and a lot of people were renting. We did not. We toured the catacomb that was open on Sunday. Great tour and experience. Then just walked along the road back towards Rome poking into little places. By late Sunday PM rode the bus noting other stops along the line. It covers a lot more than just the Appian Way. The bus appears to run around 20 to 30 mins intervals but we were not timing. We didn't have any trouble catching the next bus.
Early Monday morning we caught the bus again and now could appreciate why it was important to do the Appian Way on Sunday. We visited some of the more outlying sights and got off near the center of Rome when our ticketed expired around 1 pm. This was in Oct this past year.
I was just in Rome a few weeks ago and spent half a day on the Appian Way on a Saturday. I really enjoyed it as a break from the city. We took a bus down to the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, walked away from Rome a half mile or so, as that's where it starts to get more scenic. Then we walked all the way back to the Catacombs of San Sebastian, then caught the 118 bus by the Catacombs of San Callisto. It was really nice weather, so it was enjoyable. Past the tomb of Cecilia Metella is fine to bike, but before that would be scary unless it's Sunday.
How do others feel about the Archeobus?
