We’re thinking of devoting an afternoon to the Appian Way during our upcoming April trip. Your experiences? Guided vs unguided? E-bike vs walking? Start/end points?
We did a long section of it on foot, on our own, and with stops at some of the interesting attractions along the way. We also did it by starting at a further-afield point - Casal Rotondo - and walking back into more central Rome. I won't recommend our method of getting to that jump-on point as it's definitely not for everyone but you could grab a taxi to a chosen place to start (easiest), and there's info on the website for bus service (#118, I believe), although it doesn't travel all sections of the Appia.

This is a very useful brochure with info about the various monuments, ruins and whatnot at points along the way.

You can see where we started: #49/Mile 6. When we reached the end point of Porta San Sebastiano, we continued our walk to over to the Baths of Caracalla, San Giovanni in Laterano and a couple other churches but you could end your walk there. Along the way I'll highlight Circus of Maxentius, Catacombs of St. Sebastian or St. Callisto (fees for both), Capo Bove, and tomb of Cecila Metella. i'll also recommend getting to a far point early in the morning instead of an afternoon as it's the nicest time to be out there! Pack your breakfast and/or lunch along. Do this on a Sunday if at all possible; we had to do it on a Friday and it got pretty busy, traffic-wise, around the Cecila Metella point or so to Porta San Sebastiano,
