We have three full days in Rome. The first two days we plan to spend in the Colosseum, Forum area. The second day will be The Vatican. We have nothing planned for the third day and I am considering the Appian Way. It will be a Sunday. Has anyone done the Appian Way? Our hotel is near the Termini and we are walkers.
We "did" the Appian Way last summer, though frankly, I think we must have missed the point. We went to the catacombs, which was a good experience. You must take the bus (long way from Termini) and I don't know if it runs on Sundays. We had to walk a ways from the catacombs to the bus stop--the road is 1.5 lanes wide but uses contains 2 lanes of traffic, and has vertical walls on each side. Walking it was scary (but we do have great photos of us with cars about 6 inches from us)
I would recommend you use your day at Ostia Antica instead--it's the ancient port for Rome, and you can wander through the ruins. We loved it.
We also have a day planned at Pompeii. So would you still see Ostia Antica? Or what elase would you do? We just about like everything - museums, art, .... Just not a big shopper.
If I remember correctly, the road is closed to traffic on Sunday, so walking is easier. We actually never made it to the Appian Way, although we really enjoyed the Baths of Caracalla that are in the same general direction from Rome city center. The scale of the baths is amazing. We rode the metro to the pyramid stop and then got lost trying to find the baths, so we walked a long way. I'm still not sure what is the correct way to get there! For what its worth, I think there is lots to do right in Rome to fill a third day-like visit more churches, museums and fountains.
