Appian path and catacombs

We want to visit the Appian path and the catacombs on 8/14(Sunday). Are there buses from one sight to the other? We also consider to rent bikes to get there. Can someone suggest where we can rent the bikes near the Appian path?? Thanks!!

All of that is very clearly explained in the Steves' Rome guide including a map that shows the bike rental location on the Appian Way. Get a copy at your local library if you do not want to buy it. Riding bikes to get there is probably not the smartest idea. There are public buses that take you to specific points on the Appian Way but no special bus that takes you from site to site. You can easily walk most of the area. Sunday vehicular traffic is greatly reduced so it is easy to walk or ride on Sunday.

A couple of years ago we rode the metro to the Circus Maximus stop and then took a bus out to the catacombs. I believe all the information is in Rick's book on Rome. The road to the catacombs that the bus took is the Appian Way. The catacombs are a must see. When you buy your tickets, ask when the next English tour is. Have fun!

Just after Appia Antica exits Porto Sebastiano and crosses viale Mura Latine it becomes narrow with no shoulder and bounded by a high wall. It is very dangerous to walk or bike this stretch, which ends just after the road passes under v. Cilicia at which the Appia Antica gets its shoulder back. If you watch this http://podcasts.ricksteves.com/videos/153_Rome_CatacombsAppianWay.m4v carefully you'll see RS make a left onto Mura Latine. I later figured out (the hard way) why he did that.

Cindy is going to be there on Sunday when the traffic is restricted to buses and taxis. You can walk or bike the no shoulder areas easily. But you would not want to do it during the week.
