Anyone ever do an Appian bike tour in December? Too cold? Scenery worth it?
Well, we went in September, two years ago. Scenery and historic remains were very interesting, but the bicycling part was quite challenging, even dangerous in places. I’ve done lots of biking in my time, and the surfaces along the Appian Way are very, very rough in places. In December, or any time of year, it won’t be a smooth cruise. Have a jacket.
Thank you for the reply, I'm not the most graceful so maybe we will pass on that. We have a day to travel "away" from Rome and I have been busy trying to find the perfect day trip. :)
We had a very difficult time riding bikes there. I hadn’t fallen off a bike in decades and twice in 20 minutres and we cut our rental short. Very short. We spent a great day walking but it wa late spring. Safe travels.
The best time to be on the Appian Way is on a Sunday when the traffic is limited to buses and taxi -- no cars.

The day we were there was a Sunday. There were a few cars - part of a wedding ceremony entourage, and also trucks from a crew that was setting up some kind of a stage with a sound and light show in one spot. Maybe Sundays are the “least bad” day to try and ride the road.
