I found an advertisement for a reasonable B & B in Rome. It is called Appia and is located on the Via Fregene southeast of the Saint Giovanni Bascilica. I'll be traveling with my daughter and would prefer to stay in safe areas of the city. Does anyone know about this particular area?.
Julie, I'm not familiar with that particular B&B. You might check for comments on Trip Advisor. I'd suggest checking your local Library or Bookstore to see if you can find a copy of the Italy Guidebook. It contains listings for Hotels in various parts of Rome, and provides a brief description of the area. One other point to consider is choosing lodgings that are close to transportation and within reasonable distance from the main sights. For that reason, I generally stay in the Termini area (close to the station) and I've never felt that it wasn't a "safe area of the city". Happy travels!
Try checking with tripadvisor.com or venere.com and look at the reviews. You might also google the property and "+" reviews.
My wife and I just returned from Rome and stayed at the very reasonably priced Lillium hotel (address Via Venti Septembre 58A) which is about 6 1/2 blocks away from the Rome train station an easy walk. The hotel of about 20 rooms is in a courtyard behind wooden doors on the 3rd floor. It is very clean and quiet with a wonderful and accommodating staff. The rooms are on the small side but all are painted in pastel colors and most have private baths with a vasca (bath tub) shower combination. We loved this place and found it on venere.com. They serve a true continental breakfast in the cutest breakfast room I have ever seen. See directions to hotel below: BY CAR From the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring-road, reachable by all highways, take the Nomentana exit. Continue on Via Nomentana towards the city centre. After 12 km you will reach Piazza di Porta Pia. Drive past the ancient walls up to the first junction onto Via XX Settembre. The property is located right after the junction, on the right hand side of the street. BY TRAIN From the Roma Termini railway station take bus 38 or 92 and get off after three stops. The hotel is just a few minutes on foot from there. BY AIRPLANE
From the Leonardo da Vinci airport take the Leonardo Express train to Termini railway station. Then take bus 38 or 92 and get off after three stops. The property is just a short stroll away. Buon Viaggio!
