Appartments for the school year (Rome or outlining towns)

I'm going to be a grad student in Rome, and I was wondering if anyone had any information as to the best way to go about securing an apartment. Thanks!

Search online at WantedinRome.com and CraigsList.org. If you speak/read Italian check out PortaPortese.it. Try to avoid using an agency as they will charge a hefty commission - apartments are hard to find in Rome. Does your school offer any assistance?

Genna,

I echo Sam's sentiments - check with your school for support and info as it is very dificult to locate an apartment in Rome. We are in the process of moving off the Cassia into the Centro district and it's been challenging.

I have gotten good leads on wantedinrome.com and craig's list but I cannot imagine trying to do this from afar. Apartments do not sit empty in Rome so you may be obligated to get a "room" for a few days/weeks until you can find an apartment that meets your financial and location needs. Again, I would check those sites and yor school for support on "roomate needed" type opportunities.

Sam is also correct on the agencies. The folks we talk to want ONE MONTH'S RENT as a "finder's fee," Typical in Rome is also TWO months deposit + first month's rent so if you go to an agency you're looking at 4 MONTH'S Rent to move in!

I'd rather deal with a local. The advantage you have is that Italians LIKE to rent to Americans. They know we will pay the rent! In addition, most leases in Italy between locals are FOUR YEARS - and technically have to be approved by a "magistrate-type" position! So to be able to get a one-year lease is a blessing for them!

Start digging and ask your school for HELP!!! Best of Luck!

Ciao,
Ron
