Depends on where you are going and mode of travel, but I like AutobusRoma for buses in Rome, IT Taxi for taxis throughout Italy. There is a vaporetto app for Venice that is mighty useful and Train Timetable is good for train route, arrival, and departure info. There are food/dining apps galore ( I don't use them).
I like to use Triposo Italy. It's a travel guide loaded with useful information. Culture, history, music, sports, hotels, food and drink 🍷. I've used it on prior trips to Italy and will use it again later this year! And Rick Steves' Audio Europe.
The Trenitalia app is pretty handy. In Rome, I liked the Muoversi a Roma app to see what my bus/tram/metro options were, but I can't remember if it has an English option. Probus looks pretty good for a Rome bus app.
Eat Italy from Elizabeth Minchilli, a Rome-based food writer, for restaurant recommendations in Rome and other cities -- but it's only available for iPhone, not Android. : (
Trenit (Trenitalia app - buy train tickets on your phone, check platforms and delays), etc.
Google Maps - for walking directions and public transit directions. (Used for vaporetto in Italy too.)
I just recently got the 'Google Maps' app, which you can use to download maps of the cities/towns you plan to visit, and once you arrive to your destination, you can access the maps offline (no cellular or WiFi needed) ;-)
Thank you all so much for the tips!
FYI, Google Maps "offline" is only useful for driving directions, not walking directions or public transit directions. It is really helpful to have a working smart phone with data in Italy. The offline maps are handy for driving with your phone as a GPS without data, though.
But HERE Maps offline works perfectly for walking directions as well as driving directions .. .
Andrew H,
I was under the impression that google maps (offline) works for walking as well as for driving directions, as long as one downloads the map(s) in advance.
Can you please clarify the comment you made above?
