App for navigation and traffic in northern Italy?

We are headed to northern Italy (Alba and Lake Maggiore areas) during July with a side trip to see family in Haute Savoie in France to see family. We've rented a car at MXP. I'm a big user of the Waze app driving around at home. I find the navigation and traffic pretty accurate. This is part is due to a lot of Waze users in my area. Wondering if others have used Waze in Italy/France and if it's accurate - especially for travel times? Or, if others prefer other apps for both navigation and traffic? Thanks in advance.

For some unfathomable reason, Waze didn't work on my iphone when using cellular data (Vodaphone was my carrier in Italy). It worked fine in my hotel rooms with wifi - which was obviously no use to me at all. I did pretty good with google maps. I also had a Garmin with me. I don't think either was very good with traffic.

We have used Waze and Google Maps and the SatNav in a new car. A big factor is familiarity and up-to-date information so the SatNav was the least helpful. We couldn't get cozy with Waze, but it seemed to function as intended. If it has any Italian user base, it would be a help to get a warning on the speed cameras, but you also may be blitzed with warnings about many cameras that are signed but not active. Google Maps does very well warning / showing slowdowns on the route, and once saved us from an hour long stoppage by changing our route due to a recent accident. It also allows downloading maps for offline use which can help with reliability in mountainous terrain.

I like to use Google Maps in the US, and don’t like the Waze graphics too much, however I do use Waze in Italy because Waze warns you of all speed cameras, of which there are thousands all over Italy. So if you like Waze, go ahead. I am a Vodafone customer also, so don’t know why it didn’t work for the previous commenter. Maybe it was in an area where signal was poor. Not all speed cameras are active, but no app can know that.

I used Google maps all last summer for four road trips and found it to work pretty well. It does also have indicators for speed trap cameras, which seemed to mostly be accurate. I personally like the directions better on Apple Maps, but find it so much harder to mark all my destinations so I use Google instead.
