I will be in Italy next March and April and am thinking about staying in an apartment or B&B instead of hotels. Most of the sites I have looked at have a weekly rate listed. For most apartments, is this rate per person for the week, or just one flat rate?
Weekly rate up to a max number of people.
OK, thanks. Any preferences on websites to look at?
and pick the city - BTW, what city will you be staying at?

Rome for most of the time, then head to Florence, or Tuscan hill town. I havent decided yet.
Check out this website. www.cross-pollinate.com It is a bed and breakfast and apartment booking service for Rome, Venice and Florence. It is owned and operated by an American family living in Rome. I have stayed at some of the properties they have listed and they have always been great accommodations. They are quite reasonable also. Any questions, let me know!!!
Kyle-I used cross-pollinate.com and venere.com to research B&Bs, apartments and hotels. I also used tripadvisor.com for additional first hand accounts. These were all suggested on this website (Thanks everyone!!). I reserved a B&B in Florence with venere, and a guesthouse in Rome with cross-pollinate. 3 days and counting-Michelle
Kyle, many apartments require a Saturday to Saturday rental in Rome. There appears to be a surcharge of up to 20% for Easter week on some booking sites. I have booked through Roman Homes for a week in early April, then through Tuscany Apartments for Florence. Unfortunately the downside with an apartment is the lack of (generally speaking) ability to drop off the luggage when arriving in the morning. Still, the benefits outweigh that small hiccup.
We've always had great luck with Bed & Breakfast Association of Rome. They offer both B&B's as well as apartments.
I used VRBO to rent apartments in both Florence (3 nights) and Rome (4 nights). Although many rent by the week, there are some that do shorter times. I found apartments were cheaper than hotels for a quad room. Mostly the rates quoted are a flat rate. Some change a low flat rate, then a per person adder. I liked using the VRBO site because everything we spelled out up front. You email the owner, that will clarify reates. Some will even negotiate! I used cross-pollinate for a B&B in Venice.
be sure to ASK the owner :-) Many Italian owners do price per person...most American owners price per week. (and many should be able to be flexible with change-over days in March/April since it is still early in the season)Also...ask about "extras"! Some owners charge extra for a final cleaning and many in Italy will also charge for electricity and heat usage...many also do not...just always good to know upfront. I've been very happy with vrbo, both as an owner and a guests...but there are lots of similar sites to check out.
