Apartment Rental - Dolomites

Hi,
I am looking to rent an apartment for 5 people (myself, wife, son and wife's parents). We plan on going to the Dolomites late July/early August next year. We usually use Airbnb and Booking.com for our searches. So far we are not coming up with many options...even when searching for 4 adults only. We do not want to stay in a hotel...we prefer the extra space an apartment offers plus the extra amenities (kitchen etc.).

Another thing we are noticing is the availability calendar for many listings are not showing booking options for summer. Normally the other countries in Europe we travel to offer booking reservations 12 months out. Is this common in Italy?

Any suggestions for accommodations or other sites to search?

Thanks for your help.

In the Dolomites -- at least in the area I am most familiar with -- the same families come back year-after-year in July/August (as well as many for ski season!) and often pre-reserve their lodging the year before when they depart at the end of their holidays.

We like the Val Gardena a lot and stay at Residence Astoria. I know they have many annual regulars but you can try. Earlier in July is going to be less busy. Another property I am somewhat familiar with is Villa Aurelia. Very convenient location.

Another factor is that some do not use the booking sites since so much of their clientele repeat. You might find a property on the Val Gardena site. Note that Santa Cristina and Selva are also very nice villages.

Yes, many of the Dolomite lodgings such as the ones Laurel mentioned are apartments with kitchenettes rather than hotels. You will find many of them listed on the Val Gardena site. I also found the staff at that website to be very helpful. If you email them (for example, [email protected]) and let them know what amenities you're looking for, they will make suggestions for lodging. For instance, I believe that Residence Astoria has underground parking for guests. For someone with a car, that would be a huge bonus.

Many hotels offer apartment-style family lodging in this part of the Alps. We have stayed in 3 bedroom apartments in the Dolomites in a number of different places. Our very favorite was a place called Uhrerhof-Deur on the slopes of the Val Gardena above Ortesei. Beautiful place with extensive rose gardens, a very nice spa, and a half-board arrangement with a fabulous breakfast spread and gourmet dinners. Truly a special place that I will stay again. Very close to the Seiser Alm / Alpe de Suisi for walking during the day.
