Apartment recommendations in Italy?

We will be travelling to Rome and Florence in mid-September and are looking for accomodations for up to 5 people. Would you recommend apartment rentals or hotel rooms?

We stayed at the Hotel Casci in Florence last summer and loved
it. Check out their website (hotelcasci.com). The rooms are plain, but very clean and the hotel owners are very friendly and helpful and speak excellent English. The location is wonderful.

If you're planning to be in Rome for close to a week or more, then apartment rentals are the best and cheapest way to go. We've used http://www.rentalinrome.com with good success. It's nice to have a place to go "home" to, where you can cook at your own convenience after hitting one of the local markets. We ate our breakfasts and some dinners on a balcony looking out to St. Peters....can't get that from a hotel!

In Rome, last spring, we stayed at the Hotel Lancelot, which is about a 5-min. walk from the Colosseum. Fantastic employees, fantastic breakfasts and dinners, quiet area unless there's a wedding reception going on late at night. :)

In Florence, we stayed at the Silla Hotel, also a very nice place. Employees friendly, really good breakfasts (lots of variety), and walking distance to many things.

We were quite happy with it. It was just a few blocks from Piazza Navona and a bit hard to find the first time. But there was not a tourist in sight and because of the height of the ceilings was quite cool in spite of the hot weather. It came with linen and utensils. The host had even stocked the refrigerator!
There is a really nice supermarket close to the Pantheon. The only negative thing I can think off,is that the pull out bed in the living room was not as comfortable as the bed in the loft.
In Florence, Casci is a very nice hotel and on our second trip we stayed at this agriturismo. The only downside is you will need a car!

I would recommend an apartment. I rented mine through www.bbplanet.it. It has lists of hotels, B&B's, and apartments for just about anywhere in Italy.

I would suggest Residence Vatican Suites in Rome. It is away from the touristy areas, but close enough to the sites to visit them in no time. It is right near the Vatican, and you can even hear the bells tolling from time to time! I stayed with them for three months last winter, and couldn't have been happier!

If you are staying more than 4 days, renting an apt is easy, affordable, and convenient. We are renting one this June in Rome thru VRBO.com.........and they have rentals thru-out the world. We use them a lot.

A good idea is to follow Rick Steves suggestion, and stay in Sienna rather than Florence. Sienna is truely "magical", and is a great base. The daily buses back and forth to Florence made it a wonderful option. Florence is about the only town in Italy that is not "fun" to stay in, but great to visit!

Most apartment rentals I have seen like a minimum of a week's stay, but you can get some on a nightly basis. with a group of 5, an apartment in either place could be fun, convenient and more economical. I have found 2 good rentals in Europe so far from

www.vrbo.com - page through this site, you should see something you like.
