Apartment recommendations for 6 in Venice, Florence, Rome

Hello,
This fall I will be taking my family (mom, husband, three kids) to Italy for the first time. My mom is not a great walker and so I need a places that are central to everything. Can anyone recommend apartments that can sleep 4-6 ( my kids are little so we can squeeze if the owners allow) in Venice, Florence, and Rome that are clean and central for touring?

For traveling between cities should I just buy train tickets there or should I reserve them ahead of time? Any other transportation methods I should consider between cities?

We are also doing a cruise of the Western Mediterranean. Is it true that for visiting Europe we need to have passports that are at least six months away from expiration? Do we need VISAs as US citizens for Europe?

Use booking.com to find apartments. You can filter for your group size and see reviews of people who have stayed there.

Train is the best way to go between the cities you mention. Buying train tickets on high speed trains upto 120 days in advance can bring large savings. Use www.trenitalia.com for your bookings. www.seat61.com has an excellent explanation of the Italian train system, including train types, classes and fares.
.

Your passports should have 6 months on them at the time of entry. Regarding visas, you will not need them for any Western Mediterranean European country.

I find VRBO.com and Cross Pollinate.com to be my favorite sites for finding apartments. I hesitate to recommend a specific apartment because it is not possible to know availability without specific dates. Using VRBO or Cross-Pollinate, you can search based on your dates and size of apartment needed, and it less tedious than trying to contact apartment owners/rental agencies one at a time and having to wait a day or two for them to respond. . Fall is close and can be busy, so you will want to get this done ASAP. Try for at least a 2-bedroom. Usually there is a convertible sofa in the living rooms area.
