Apartment in Rome

We are 4 women (50's-60'), looking to rent an apartment for a week in Rome in June. Looking for suggestions for neighborhoods to help with narrowing our search. Prefer area that is safe at night and close to public transportation.
Thanks

We stayed for a week in an excellent apartment on www.HomeAway.com in Trastevere. It was December 3 years ago, and not during the high summer tourist season, so it didn't feel besieged with tourists at the time. As for safety, it was actually just around the corner from the police station, but the whole neighborhood felt safe at any time of day or night.

The direct train from the airport to the Trastevere station was convenient, and Tram #8 got us from/to the station to the apartment with ease. Tram #8 was 3 short blocks away from the apartment, and also got us across the Tiber River into Central Rome. The neighborhood outdoor market and grocery stores, and the tavola calda and pasta shops, made it easy to pick up food and supplies for our weeklong stay.

Our apartment came with air conditioning, which we didn't need in December, but depending on what part of June you're considering, and how much time you plan to be in the apartment and at what times of the day, you may want to look for a place with A/C.

I always feel safe staying in the convenient Pantheon/Piazza Navona/Campo de Fiori triangle. I dislike the area near the train station. The most beautiful apartment I've found so far is the Stoli at romit.com, right around the corner from Piazza Navona. It's not cheap, and there are stairs, but it's stunning (and has a washer AND dryer.) In April we're staying at Palazzo Olivia in their larger apartment, but have never seen it.

As for public transportation, with four travelers, I'd skip it and take a taxi! Taxis are relatively cheap, buses are a pain, and the metro is limited except for a few good long hauls -- just my unsolicited over-generalizations! A week in Rome sounds great!

We also stayed in the area near Campo di Fiore and it was pretty central within the city. We wound up using cabs or walking most of the time, as the subway runs in an X route in the city and never seemed to work out for where we wanted to go. We used Airbnb for our place and I've had nothing but good experiences using it, both in the US and abroad.
