Any suggestions on an apartment to rent in Rome -- or a hotel that is not a chain?

Do you have a copy of RS Rome Guide Book yet? If so, great. If not you can order one elsewhere on this web site
(see "Books"). It is full of places to stay. Happy travels

The RS books are an excellent resource. You can also try vrbo.com for apartments. There's no shortage of hotels and B&Bs in Rome that are not part of a chain.

We used vrbo to book a studio apt with a view of the Coloseium. Haven't been there yet, but going next. month. The rate was very reasonable and the location looks good.

I found an apartment on booking.com in Trastavere for 100 euro a night, Appartamenti Gardenia. Haven't been yet, could be a nightmare or the coolest deal in Rome. Won't know till the last week of June.

Susan, renting an apartment in Rome can be a great experience and save you some money. Last year we rented our first apartment rental in Rome. We never needed a rental because we lived here or just shacked up with friends when we returned for a weekend. You can read about our experience and a few apt tips HERE! For some folks an apartment "works." For others, who appreciate the assistance of a hotel or B&B staff, manager, owner, etc. they prefer the "support" amenities, and opt for a hotel or B&B. Really depends on what type of experience you're seeking. There are far more hotels in Rome that ARE NOT chains. Most are locally owned. And even the chain hotels don't often seem like the cookie-cutter approach you may find in some US chains. I know, I used to be on the road 265+ days a year in the USA! No, the hotels here - in the city - tend to blend in. And there are more than 2000 accommodation options for hotels and B&B's in the city. The biggest challenge may be "selecting one." For first time visitors, I often recommend staying in the centro area - in either an apt, hotel, or B&B - if your budget will permit. This area will get you closest to most sites and allows you to often walk home rather than needing to ride a bus or metro. If you prefer a hotel or B&B, these lists offer the best-rated accommodations in this section of town: Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain. You'll also get many great recommendations here on this board - use the search option! Good Luck.

7 years ago I used Romeby.com and found a wonderful 1 bedroom apartment in the Old Jewish section of Rome. Sadly, that apartment is no longer listed, new owner doesn't rent it out. It was a great area though. Apartment was large. Bed was comfortable. Fully equipped kitchen and the owner provided freshly ground coffee and some homemade pasta as a welcoming gift. She also had an electic music library complete with CD player. Loved returning to the apartment in the evening, having some tea, listening to opera, jazz or the blues while writing in my journal. I'd rent through Romeby again but as 7 years have passed I'd be certain to read reviews on Tripadvisor. Things change. Sometimes not for the best.

I can personally recommend vrbo #336305. We just left that apt and stayed there last year as well. It overlooks Campo dei Fiori.

I used cross-pollinate.com from Rick's books and stayed at Iris's flat in Trastevere in Mid March. Was perfect for the 3 in our groups needs. Really enjoyed the privacy and location was great in my view

RoninRome helped us with an apt using SleepinItaly. Very reasonable and in a great area, near Piazza Navona. Good luck!

we rented a private apt in piazza navona thru freereservation.com great area, walked everywhere.just a few tips to look out for: what floor is it on and do they have an elevator or how many flights of stairs to walk up with luggage some may ask for cash only. we bought euros here in states and paid upon arrival. even though we paid the fee, it was better than looking for ATM's that would give that amount and not being stressed. another site is homeaway.com, the beehive.com, cross-pollinate.com do your homework, email people directly and get all info you will need.
enjoy and have a great time

We stayed a week at Palazzo Olilvia, just a short block from Piazza Navona. The apartment itself was not large, but the rooms were spacious enough for luggage and sleeping, air conditioned, and quite useful for our purposes. An elevator made for easy passge to the upper levels. It's just off Corso Vittoria Emanuele but the noise was negligibl. Bus stops south were across the street and in the other direction less than a block away. There are several small cafes and shops in the area, and the Vatican is an easy walk, as are the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and other areas of interest. I suggest you check it out. It worked well for us.
