Has anyone used the agency/ website "sleep-in-italy" to book an apartment in Rome? The security deposit is to be made by check ( not credit card ) at time of booking and is to be returned by owner at check-out. Is this o-k to do?
I've used Sleep in Italy twice and have been very satisfied. However, we paid our deposit exactly as described on the "payment" page: deposit by credit card on their secure form, the balance in cash on arrival. It looks like a few individual apartment owners might require an extra security deposit made by check. I'd feel fine doing it that way, but if you're not, they have plenty of apartments to choose from that don't require an extra deposit. I found Sleep in Italy to be very responsive to my emails; try asking them about it, and what they'd recommend for you.
We were going to use Sleep in Italy in 2007 but after research, we decided not to. Most had a positive experience with them but if there was a problem when you get there, they were not resposive at all. In fact, I just received an email from friends this past weekend who are staying in one of their apartments. The process of renting went well. However, once they were in the apartment trying to relax, there were very loud banging from the above apartment which turned out to be being renovated. They have tried to contact the agency several times but they are not responding. So beware!
