Apartment / AirBnb Recommendations near Montepulciano

Hello there,

We are looking for a place to stay in September in/near Montepulciano. (Open to Pienza or Montalcino as well)
I've been sorting through tons of listings, but would love a recommendation if you have one. Our specific desires:

  • Be near enough to town to have dinner easily but also has a small kitchen for dining in
  • Either two bedrooms or a property with multiple apartments (traveling with 2 couples and a toddler)
  • Has a good view that we can enjoy during nap times
  • Bonus: if one room has a double bed and single bed (have seen this a few times)

Thanks in advance!

Jesse

I've stayed at Palazzo Bellarmine three times, most recently in September of 2017. For location, you can't get much better, right off the main piazza in Montepulciano. Prices are very reasonable and the property ticks off all your checks-convient to many restaurants, 1-2 bedroom units, all have kitchens. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended and some units do have views

[2nd Edit: Apparently the kitchen is available--here's a quote from Tripadvisor: "Kitchen and fridge at your disposal." We did not use them.]

We really liked this place last May: Antica Sosta, Via Dante Alighieri 145, 532027, San Quirico d'Orcia. It is not in a town you mention, but is quite close to Montalcino and Pienza etc., and about 1/2 hour to Montepulciano. We stayed in an apartment with one double bed, but there are other apartments in the building. The lady who runs the place is really nice, and provides a nearly unbelievable breakfast plus 24-hour access to cakes and other pastries for snacks.

San Quirico d'Orcia itself is delightful, with medieval streets and buildings, wine shops, and a cafe in a tiny square next to the church; also, there were almost no other English-speaking tourists when we were there. There is a wonderful restaurant in San Quirico--on the right about a 10/12-minute walk into town from the Airbnb. I don't remember the name unfortunately, but it is the one with the nice shaded patio in back. It was so good that in multiple visits I never got past the first thing on the menu, pasta alla pomodoro, which I had with Tuscan bean soup. Finally, SQ is pretty level, so the walking is easier there than in the hill towns.

We thought this whole area was fantastic. Just drive in any direction and you come to one amazing town or view after another. Sant'Antimo Abbey is also wonderful, and pretty close by, though we would never have found it without the GPS. BTW there is a lot of hiking too, even to Pienza (!), though we did not try that.

I had the same question several months ago and some folks here on the RS forum suggested this place: http://montorio.com/
Beautiful place just down the hill from Montepulciano - not far from the Church of San Biagio. All self catering apartments with pretty views. Long story short - we wound up booking there for an upcoming trip in May. Might be what you're looking for.

Do you have a car or are you using public transportation?

Thank you for suggestions so far. Our plan is to have a car, but we would like to stay in or walking distance to restaurants.

Look up the Politian apartments in Montepulciano. Beautiful! Stayed there twice. I find the photos and online descriptions accurate. Mostly one and two bedroom apts with kitchens; some have washing machines. Gorgeous views esp from higher apts. Wonderful, very helpful hosts; parking right outside; easy walking to restaurants, Duomo, wine tasting rooms.

Might I suggest you consider Pienza over Montepulchiano. A friend and I stayed in the Back Home apartment in Pienza in October and Pienza is great.

Pienza is not as overrun by tourists and is relatively flat. Montepulchiano is lovely to visit but the entire city in on such a steep hill, I would not want to stay there. I know I may be in the minority on this, but think it’s good for people to have the information.

Pienza has a number of great restaurants and is centrally located to visit lots of cities in southern Tuscany.

I have mixed feelings about the apartment we rented, but not about Pienza.
