Hi!
Trying to decide between visiting Aosta Valley or the Dolomite's in the Summer. Want to be somewhere peaceful and where I can take a lift up the mountain. Any thoughts or preferences for these two locations. Thank you!
How and when does this fit into your itinerary?
It’s not clear from your previous posts exactly what you have decided on.
It appears you will pick up a car leaving Venice-so Dolomites makes more sense than Aosta
Ortisei is fabulous for that.
The Dolomites is busy during ski and hiking seasons. Not sure how peaceful is peaceful for you, but it will be crowded.
What kind of mountain experience are you interested in? The Dolomites are what I describe as Heidi mountains. Beautiful in a green, sound of music way. Some jagged peaks, but not the feeling of mountaineering mountains. The Alps are more like that: more rugged feeling. I did not feel awe in the Dolomites, although I could appreciate the incredible beauty. Both offer gondolas, and many trails, and towns to visit. If you want charm, go for the Dolomites. Rugged awe: the Alps (imo, ;p)
Thank you everyone for your responses!

I always find it amusing when foreigners, who really haven’t spent an inordinate amount of time in one place, make strange comments such as this. I’m an American married to a northern Italian. They LIVE to hike. My father-in-law lives near the Dolomiti. Every June when my wife and I vacation here, (we’re here now) he takes us to the lakes for our annual visit, and after our external vacation and return to Italy, we go on hikes. This year we’ll be doing the Dolomiti, a medium hike of about 5 hours, altitude change from 500-1500 meters. Most northern Italians would take offense at this description of them as the “Heidi mountains”. I’ll leave it as uneducated foreigners not knowing the full extent of the Dolomites. Also, we’ve hiked and skied both areas extensively, cross country, of course.
