I plan on coming over from Chamonix France and entering Aosta by sky tram per rick's suggestion next September. Has anyone done this? Is it a viable loop, I want to end up in Nice via Torino. And most important is Aosta a good destination, how long would you stay there and what is there to see?
If you dont get a list of things to see, do a google search for 'Aosta attractions' or 'sights' for suggestions of what to see.
We spent two nights in Aosta in 2007. There are a number of castles and the scenery is nice. We did have a car so we were able to drive around the country side and it was nice. We also drove over to Chamonix and took the cable car up to the Aiguille Du Midi. The Italian side was closed (this was in May) so we could not take the complete trip from France to Italy or vice versa. As far as your question about Aosta I woul say that if you have a car you could spend a couple of nights and see some sights but if without a car I would probable only stay there one night. Our intention was to take a hot air balloon ride in the Aosta valley but it was too windy the day we had scheduled this event. The Grand Paradiso Natl Park is fairly close and offered some nice views and photo ops. The sky tram ride from Chamonix over to the Italian side should provide some great views. I would go early as the weather tends to get cloudy later. When we started on our trip up the views of Mt. Blanc were clear with no clouds and before we got to the stopping point it was cloudy and visibility was virtually zero. This was mid to late morning so an early morning ride up the lift would have been better. Chamonix is a beautiful place and more scenic to me than Aosta.
