Anzio Tour

We will be spending some time in Rome in May and we would like to go to Anzio. My dad was there and I would like to see the area. Are there tours anyone could recommend or do we just take the train and look around ourselves?

Appreciate any information;
Thanks!
Cindy

I went to Anzio and you should know there's not much to see. While it's chilling to remember that so many died on such an ordinary seashore, today there is nothing remaining to enhance one's imagination. There's a small museum with some artifacts and displays - "Museo dello Sbarco di Anzio". There's a Commonwealth war cemetery at Anzio and an American war cemetery at nearby Nettuno.

There is a company that offers tours of Anzio perhaps as part of a larger tour which includes Monte Cassino. The website is here: http://www.anziotours.com/ There are reviews on TripAdvisor here: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g194714-d2039145-r133361158-Monte_Cassino_Battlefield_Tours-Cassino_Province_of_Frosinone_Lazio.html

Mike:
Thanks so much for the information. We have been to Rome several times and each time there was just not enough time for us to go. It is one of those things that I need to do; if you know what I mean. I looked at the tour link and wow! I will definitely check that out as one of the things mentioned was the 34th division-Red Bull.

Thanks again,
Cindy

Hey Cindy,

Your thread caught my attention since I was thinking of going out to Anzio myself if we had time on our up coming trip to Rome. My Grandpas cousin Forest Von Ruden was KIA at Anzio and he was also with the 34th Red Bulls. He was part of a Minnesota unit. Enjoy your trip tracing your fathers foot step. I sure respect and appreciate brave men like your father and Forest for defending freedom.

God Bless,
Hank

I took the train from Rome to Anzio a few years ago. It is a short, pleasant stroll through town to the beach and landing areas. There is a sign at the beach about the Anzio landings. I recommend reading up on that part of the Italy campaign. The story is interesting, and heartbreaking. It took a long time to get to Rome from there. There may be a museum there. I got caught in the rain and cut my visit short. There are numerous bars and restaurants and a yacht harbor.

We have decided to go with Danila Bracaglia who does the Anzio tours. I am very excited to take a tour with her as after giving her some information about my dad, she has already done some research and put together some ideas of where to go. I have found after being on a number of Rick Steves tours, that having a guide explain things makes the experience that much better. This is going to be the highlight of our trip for me; I have been wanting to do this for some time!
