Anzio sidetrip from Rome

At Anzio, we read about nice beaches and seafood, Roman ruins, a small but interesting WWII landing museum, the big American cemetery next door in Nettuna. It sounds like a nice day trip from Rome. Does anyone agree? Any recent experiences? I am concerned that all the guidebooks seem to totally neglect Anzio. Are they making a mistake? Will any of you stand up for it?

Mark, I believe that would be an interesting day trip, and as I'm interested in WW-II history, it's "on my list" for places to visit. The rail trip from Rome is easy, with numerous departures every day, and travel time ~1H:05M each way. From what I can determine, the Museum may conduct tours "by appointment only"? Have a look at The Museum website for details. While this is not covered in the ETBD Guidebooks, there's probably some coverage in the Lonely Planet Guidebooks (I haven't checked). Happy travels!
