ANZIO

My dad survived the Anzio seige, I was wondering about trains from Rome - a day trip - is it possible

Hi Lou,
My dad was at Anzio as well from January 1944 until they broke out to Rome; he was in the US infantry, and got a battlefield commission to 2nd lieutenant.
We'll be in Rome next week for the first time and plan to go to Anzio as well. There are frequent trains between Anzio and Rome, from what I gather on the trenitalia website and others who have visited.
Best of luck,
Paul

Just got back from the 17 day Italy trip. My friend and I made the side trip from Rome to Anzio on Oct 1, 2007.

We walked from our hotel to the train station, three blocks or so, and bought our tickets to Anzio, about 6 euros round trip.

In a hurry we jumped on the train to Naples. One would think that a train to Naples would go through Anzio. IT DOESN'T, don't get on the Naples train.

The conductors were friendly, dropped us off at Latina, way past Anzio, were we got new tickets and directions from a friendly ticket agent to go back to Campoleaone and change trains to Nettuno. Nettuno is the last stop of the train that goes through Anzio.

We made it to Anzio, Rick would be proud. Anzio is a really nice town. We walked along the wharf, took picures, hiked around town and had a few beers in the piazza to salute those who mde the landing. Small memorial on the wall of the coast guard building.

So get your tickets, take the train to Nettuno and you will be alright

Good book for info on landing. Has maps of landing and breakout.

On the part of the trip to the Dolomites I followed the 10th Mountain Division with the book, "See Naples and Die" by Robert Ellis(who was there).

We had a great trip, I know you will to.

Anzio is only 25 miles SW of Rome. A day trip is easy, even a half day is enough. Thank your Dad for his service!
