We are flying into MXP from Newark, arr. 7:30 am. Our friends with whom we are traveling arrive @12:30. We can waste a few hours getting our bags, getting breakfast, getting the rental car but that leaves more time than I would like sitting around the airport. We'll have a car so is there any place to visit during our wait time?

Lake Maggiore is close (I was researching for a friend of mine and I discovered this), but the places more of interest might be an hour away by car, like Stresa. That seems to be quite a ways up the lake, so maybe stops at the lower lake areas might be more timely for you.
I bet people here will know the best places on the lake.

The closest town to visit on Lake Maggiore is Ranco and we have gone there when we arrived. A nice, less touristed town on the lake, restaurants etc. . Easy drive.

Speaking of that side of the lake, you could just start driving up the lake and stop in all the towns, from the bottom at Sesto Calende to Ranco where the shoreline turns east, and go wherever you want!
