Anyone with experience on Pantelleria island?

Researching capers and caperberries as cooking ingredients, I discovered that apparently the best in the world are grown on the small island of Pantelleria, 70 miles southwest of Sicily and only 40 miles from Tunisia. Has anyone visited?

An article says it’s known as “the black pearl of the Mediterranean” for its black-lava cliffs, and also grows an exclusive wine grape, endures gusty winds 340 days a year, and has craters that occasionally shoot out hot water. It’s described as being off the tourist radar, yet where lots of Italian glitterati, like Giorgio Armani, have vacation homes. There’s limited fresh water, but the island’s houses, called dammusi, have special domed roofs to gather rainwater.

Flights from several cities in Italy, and ferries from Sicily are available to get you there in an hour or two. Anybody here with personal experience or further knowledge about Pantelleria? How long do you suggest for a stay?

Cyn, your posting peaked my interest especially for the capers and the exclusive grape called Zibibbo. In addition I read about their history of Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Normans, and Arabs. I imagine the cuisine would be wonderful. We had planned to be in Sicily last September. We were going to end our tour in the Aeolian Islands. The island of Salina also claims to have the “World’s Best Capers!” I hope to hear more about Pantelleria. May have to add it to our next itinerary.

While you’re there, don’t forget the leaves of the caper plant. One of the best meals I’ve ever eaten was at a friend’s grandparents’ house in Cyprus -roast chicken and potatoes with boiled caper leaves as the green vegetable. The leaves have the same distinctive taste and worked so well with the simple oregano chicken. The smell and taste were mouth-watering, even in memory!

Our next visit to Italy might just include a return to Sicily, with a Caper caper on Pantelleria. Thanks for the responses, and I hope there might be some others.

My life's goal is to one day see every spit on land on the Mediterranean, so I love this.
It was amazing to see caper plant for the first time, of course I forget what island I was on when I did so. They grow like weeds in many places, such as rock walls outside Lecce. I love the caper berries too--like mega capers!
