Jay, "Thinking of Stresa but concerned its to touristy." Just about ANYWHERE in Italy can be touristy, depending on time-of-year. I didn't find Stresa to be too "touristy" at all. If you're planning to get a Hotel "on the lake", be prepared to increase your budget accordingly. I stayed at Hotel Saini Meublé on my last visit to Stresa, and I was very pleased with the room and the owner was wonderful! It's about a one minute walk to the docks in one direction, and about a minute to a great Piazza with lots of restaurants in the other direction. As I recall, there's a Laundromat nearby also. It's not really that far from the station, so walking is possible (although with luggage, I took a Taxi). If you'll be there for a few days, you might consider taking a day trip to Locarno (Switzerland) on the scenic Cento Valli Railway, returning by boat in the late afternoon. It's a fantastic trip! Happy travels!

I LOVED Stresa! Yes it is a little touristy, just avoid eating at the restaurants on the piazza. It's a lovely place with so many beautiful gardens, it was the highlight of my trip last May.
