Anyone rented from Europcar?

Booked a flight from Sicily to Florence on Meridiana airlines. They have a partnership with Europcar and have the cheapest cars I've seen so far. Trying to figure out if booking with them will leave us with our bags in one hand and no keys in the other.

I've used them a few times over the years. No problems.

I used them last year and didn't have any problems. Actually, AutoEurope got us the car through Europcar. I did have a problem with AutoEurope as they had reserved a car through Hertz and when I showed up to rent the car, there were no cars available and Hertz didn't have my reservation. So, I got on the phone with AutoEurope and they found me a car through Europcar & everything was fine. Europcar is a big company and I don't think you'll have any problems with them. Just re-confirm your reservation before leaving home.

I booked through Autoeurope also and picked up the car at Europcar at their Via Del Gelsimino location. We had great service with a strong English speaking rep which is good as you're signing contracts. When we returned the car to their location in Chiusi the rep spoke no English. At pick up the computer gave a pick up time just as they opened but we had to wait for the car . I asked him to note it on the contract that we did not take possession of the car for another 40 minutes as it was a three day rental and the return location wouldn't be open early enough. Sure enough we were billed the extra day. I thought it would be a huge hassle but I wrote back to the Rome billing office(both in Italian and English) with the explanation from the rep hilighted and the extra day charge was immediately removed.

Got to agree with Steve. Make sure that you get a quote from Autoeurope. They are a broker that uses all of the big guys. Many times they have hooked us up with Europecar, and we were very happy with them.

I tried all the big sites, Hertz, Avis, AutoEurope and nothing beat the deal Europcar had from me booking a flight on Meridiana Airlines. 320$ for 3 days in Sicily and 360$ for 4 days in Tuscany. Both with Airport tax and Navigation. The others were in the 500$ range. It says its promotional pricing through Meridiana. Going to call to confirm, but Europcar's website has our reservation in the system.

We used Europcar last May--picked up the car at Ciampino AP just outside of Rome, drove it all over Tuscany, and returned the car to AP in Florence. They were great to deal with. The rep who looked the car over when we turned it in called us a taxi which picked us up right beside the car which we appreciated and avoided schlepping luggage across parking lot. We loved the fact that the little Alfa Romeo already had quite a few scratches on it when we got it.

Rented from the Florence airport with no problems. Sometimes you can get a discount also for pre-paying. Please be aware that you won't need a car for Florence proper, nor should you drive into the city center. PLEASE SEE OTHER POSTS ON THE HELPLINE REGARDING THE LIMITED TRAFFIC ZONES(ZTL)IN THE CITY CENTER. You can get heavy fines for driving there. A rental car is best for exploring the countryside.

Yeah I've read about the no drive zones. Similar to our speed traps in the states. Picked Florence Airport to get out quick and head to Tuscany.

I have used Europcar many times and have been happy with the service. Lately, however, I have been using AutoEurope because the prices are better. Many times you will take the car from Europcar or some other vender. Last summer I damaged my car in Nusco near Napoli. The deductible with Europcar was 400 euro and 250 with AutoEurope. I had to pay the Europcar charge and AutoEurope refunded the difference. I plan to use AutoEurope both times I will be in Italy this summer.

Buon viaggio,

RB

Used them in Italy fine. One thing: if you're close to the times the office opens or closes, (check it on the web or call), I'd give yourself lots of times. 5:00 doesn't necessarily mean 5 in Europe or Italy at Europcar. LOL

Otherwise, great experience, great car.

I have used them through Gemut. No problems and had a brand new car.

I've always had good experiences with rental companies in the past, but dealing with Europcar was a nightmare. I rented a car from them in Spain this past December. My girlfriend found a special on automatic cars on their website, and since I (embarrassingly enough) can't drive stick, we made a reservation. Guess what? When we got to their office in Valladolid, they didn't have any automatics. We had to pay for train tickets to Madrid and spend the rest of the day traveling back to pick up the car. Not too cool, but we weren't going to let it ruin our trip.

Aside from some mechanical warning lights Europcar told us to ignore, the car itself was fine. No complaints there.

After we returned the car, however, a mysterious charge for several thousand euros appeared on my credit card bill. It turns out that Europcar had almost doubled our rental rate. No explanation given. Then, although we had declined the optional insurance and damage waivers, they charged us for those as well. To top it off, they included several hundred euros worth of damage charges. There had been absolutely no damage to the car.

Talking to the company was useless; they just kept telling us they'd look into it and we never heard back. It's March now, and I'm still sorting out the charges with my credit card company.
